Why Scientists Study the Gut Microbiome and Sleep Together
Your gut microbiome is the community of microorganisms living in your
digestive tract. Sleep is controlled through a much larger network that
includes the brain, nervous system, hormones, immune activity,
environmental cues, daily schedules, and circadian rhythms.
Researchers are interested in where those systems overlap. One area is
the gut-brain axis, a broad term for
communication between the digestive system and the nervous system.
Microbial metabolites, immune signaling, diet, stress, and circadian
timing are among the pathways being investigated.
This does not mean that gut bacteria work like an on/off switch for
sleep. It means the microbiome may be one part of a much larger biological
system that researchers are still working to understand.
